April 16, 2017:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BOYS: Tanner Cooper, Canandaigua baseball. The senior pitcher/shortstop struck out six batters in six innings in a 12-2 win over Pittsford Mendon. He also belted a two-out, two-run home run in the return game, a 4-3 win over the Vikings. The All-Greater Rochester pick was MVP of the 2016 Section V Class A1 tournament.

GIRLS: Alana Piano, Aquinas. The junior lacrosse midfielder is off to a strong start this spring for the Little Irish with 22 goals and 6 assists. She had three goals in an 8-5 win over rival Mercy. 

March 25, 2017:

BOYS: TySean Sizer, Irondequoit. The senior guard scored 21 points in the Eagles' 54-43 win over Our Lady of Lourdes in the Class A state championship game and added 13 points in their semifinal victory over Jamesville-DeWitt.

GIRLS: Caroline Cullinan, Pittsford Mendon. The senior forward had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Vikings' 48-46 Class A state title game loss to Jamesville-DeWitt and 11 points and 9 boards in a semifinal win.

February 28, 2017:

GIRL: Sammy Watson, Rush-Henrietta. The star Royal Comets runner broke yet another record at the Meet of Champions, topping Stacey Prey's 32-year-old mark in the 1,500 by more than five seconds, running 4 minutes, 31.65 seconds at RIT.

BOY: Maison Fadale, Brockport. The high-scoring forward had a pair of goals and an assist in the Blue Devils' 6-1 win in the Section V Class B hockey semifinals.

February 21, 2017:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BOYS: Jacob DiSanto, Victor. The senior guard leads the Blue Devils in scoring at nearly 20 points per game. He also hit five 3-pointers and scored 28 points in a 61-55 win over Eastridge.

GIRLS: Grace Mattern, Brighton. The eighth-grader won the Section V Nordic (cross country) skiing championship at Bristol, finishing the 7.5-kilometer 30 minutes, 3.9 seconds.

BOYS: Jamarr Paisley, Harley-Allendale Columbia. The senior swingman averages a team-high 18.5 points for the Wolves, who have improved from 1-20 last year to 5-12 this season.

GIRLS: Erica Ellis, Gates Chili. The sophomore broke her own Section V record in pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 10 inches. She eclipsed the old Section V mark of 12-4 in mid-January by clearing 12-7.

BOYS: Kamren Davis, Sodus. The senior center and power forward in basketball averages 8 points and 6 rebounds but is a leader for his team, drawing 14 offensive fouls. He's also a soccer goalie and a pitcher annd 1B in baseball.

GIRLS: Maddy Walsh, East Rochester. The senior guard eclipse the 1,000-point mark in her career for the Bombers. She already has more than 400 assists and steals and 350 rebounds in her career. Walsh was an All-Greater Rochester pick in field hockey.

BOYS: Ben Bulkeley, Fairport track. The junior won the high school mile at the New Balance Games in New York City to earn a spot in the Millrose Games on Feb. 11.  

GIRLS: Elsa Cole, Fillmore. The senior won the 1,500 meters in a meet at Houghton College in 4:57.73. She plans to run in college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn.

BOYS: Ryan Babineau, Webster Thomasthe hockey. The goaltender led the Titans to nine wins in his 12 start and posted a 1.73 goals-against average, which ranks among the best in  Section V Hockey. 

GIRLS: Alex Button, Wayland-Cohocton basketball. The junior guard/forward averaged 19.6 points and grabbed 12, 10 and 9 rebounds in wins over Hornell, Wellsville and Livonia. The Eagles are off to a 12-3 start and Button has committed to Monmouth University.

January 15, 2017:

BOYS: Norberto Cervantes, Williamson. The senior weight thrower set a Section V record of 60 feet, 11 inches, breaking his own mark of 60-8.25.

GIRLS: Sara Lyons, Pittsford Mendon. The senior guard for the unbeaten Vikings scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds in a win over Geneva, had 11 points in a win over Rush-Henrietta and added 12 more points in a rout of Brockport. She leads the team at 17.8 points per game.

GIRLS: Erika Oechsle, Gates Chili basketball. The junior forward is the leading rebounder for the Spartans, whose seven wins this winter already matched last year's win total.

BOYS: Rayshawn Boswell, Monroe basketball. The junior scored 32 points and 23 points, respectively, in a pair of victories to help power his team's 3-0 start. He led the Redjackets in scoring last year at 23.5 points per game. 

GIRLS: Lindsay Browning, Penfield hockey. The goaltender stopped 21 shots in a 2-0 win over rival Fairport on Tuesday. The Cornell University-bound senior has been a key reason the Patriots are off to a 6-0 start.

November 19, 2016:

BOYS: Kyle Benham, Greece Athena. The tight end/defensive end made several key tackles and two sacks to help the Trojans win their Far West Regional game, 41-12, over Buffalo Bennett. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior has seven TD catches and 25 receptions overall for 475 yards on the season.

GIRLS: Erin Coykendall, Spencerport. The sophomore forward scored both goals to lead the Rangers to a 2-1 win over Jamesville-DeWitt and the school's first state championship, in any sport. She finished with a team-high 23 goals for the Class A champions who finished No. 4 in the final USA Today rankings.

November 10, 2016:

BOYS: Toyi Hakizimana, World of Inquiry. The sophomore forward pumped in four goals in a 4-3 win over Byron-Bergen/Elba in last Saturday's Section V Class C1 title match. He had a goal and two assists in a 5-0 win over Marion and then two goals and an assist in Friday's state regional win, 5-0, over Allegany-Limestone. For the season, he has 30 goals and 14 assists. The Griffins, 19-1-1 on the season and state runners-up in 2014, are three wins from the promised land. 

GIRLS: Savannah Bothner, Pittsford Sutherland. The senior volleyball hitter had 12 kills and a team-high 22 digs and was named MVP of Class A tournament as the second-seeded Knights won their fifth straight title on Friday, coming back from a set down to edge No. 1 Irondequoit.

BOYS: Jason Cunningham, Brighton football. The 5-foot-10, 225-pound senior running back rushed 27 times for 220 yards to power the second-seeded Barons to a 50-36 win over Eastridge in the Section V Class A football semifinals.  

GIRLS: Katrina Yencer, Avon girls soccer. The junior midfielder scored a pair of goals as the seventh-seeded Braves upset No. 2 Warsaw, 2-0, to win the Section V Class C2 championship match. She also had three assists in a semfinal win, 3-1, over Bishop Kearney. Avon entered sectionals with an 8-8 record. Yencer has 22 goals and 12 assists this fall.

BOYS: Brody Metcalf, Livonia football. The senior quarterback amassed 429 all-purpose yards in a 42-6 romp over Bath. He ran 9 times for 144 yards and was 12-for-22 passing for 278 yards. He ran for 4 touchdowns and passed for two more.

GIRLS: Maddy Lowe, Webster Schroeder soccer. She scored one goal in a 2-0 win over Irondequoit, then had four goals in a 4-0 win over Hilton. The Warriors also won their regular-season finale at Penfield on Friday on Rachel Wengender's early goal off a feed from the Ohio State-bound Lowe.

BOYS: Jonathon Brown, Canandaigua soccer: Scored two goals and had an assist in wins over Greece Odyssey (5-0) and Greece Athena, 3-0, on Friday, as the Braves upset the top team in the D&C poll and improved to 10-0-1. In doing so, he set a school record for career goals. The senior forward now has 54.

GIRLS: Lauren Oplanden, Spencerport soccer: The sophomore goalie made 7 saves in a 1-0 win over Penfield and 6 saves in a 4-0 win over Webster Thomas, as the Rangers improved to 7-0-1. They're ranked second in the D&C large-school poll. She's a transfer from Greece Arcadia. She has 39 saves.

BOYS: Fairport senior quarterback Keshawn Howard. The third-year starter was 10-for-16 passing for 321 yards and three TDs as the Red Raiders rolled to a 31-3 lead at halftime en route to a 48-3 romp over Penfield to go to 3-0. Fairport plays Rush-Henrietta (2-1) next Saturday (Sept. 24) in a Monroe County showdown.

GIRLS: Webster Thomas cross country runner Amanda Vestri posted the 10th fastest race of all-time on the course at Webster Park on Sept. 13, winning in 18 minutes and 31 seconds. The senior is a three-time Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester pick.

BOYS: Hilton senior senior running back Kyle Napier rushed for 120 yards on just 9 carries and scored 4 TDs in a Week 2 rout of Webster Thomas. He ran for TDs of 60 and 6 yards, returned a kickoff 88 yards and an INT 24 yards.

GIRLS: Geneseo soccer player, Vicki Finn. The senior forward scored a pair of goals as the Blue Devils beat South Seneca 5-2 on Friday to win the Wayland-Cohocton tournament. She also had two assists to Erin Rollins in a 2-1 win over Byron-Bergen on Wednesday.

BOYS: Terry Taylor III, Greece Olympia. The senior qualified for the state championships in the pole vault and with the Spartans' 400-meter relay team. He cleared 14 feet, 3 inches to finish first in the Division II group at Section V's state qualifier meet. 

GIRLS: Abby Frank, Penfield. The junior qualified for the state championships in the 100-meter dash, running a personal-best 12.35 seconds only 15 months after a serious knee injury.

GIRLS: Maria Marcera, Irondequoit. The junior shortstop went 6-for-14with 5 RBI, 4 during a lopsided win over Honeoye Falls-Lima, while the Eagles won 3 out of 4 games. She's batting .486 average with a .532 on-base percentage and .785 slugging percentage. Marcera has driven in 19 runs and hit 3 home runs. Irondequoit is the No. 4 seed and beat #5 Mercy on Friday in Class A1 Tournament, plays #1 Mendon on Tuesday at Brockport.

BOYS: Tobi Tella, McQuaid track. The senior and two-time All-Greater Rochester selection broke the meet long jump record during the Royal Comet Invitational. He leaped 22 feet-6.5 inches, the season's best in Section V.

 

May 14, 2016:

GIRLS: Andra Savage, Pal-Mac lacrosse. The eighth-grader had 5 goals and 2 assists in a 16-2 win over Gananda and 5 goals in a 16-3 win Friday over Marcus Whitman. Red Raiders are 13-2. She has a team-high 42 goals and 8 assists.

BOYS: Paul Dellinger, Brighton junior. Seeded fourth in The Glavin, he won the showcase 3200-meter race at the Runnin' Cadet Classic last Saturday at Hilton, setting a personal best by 12 seconds. His time: 9 minutes, 18.99 seconds. His main events are 1600, 800 and 3200.

BOYS: Tre'Maine Moore, Greece Olympia track. The senior helped the Spartans win the boys team scoring during the His & Hers Invitational at Penfield with a second-place finish in the 100 and first in the triple jump (43 feet-9 3/4 inches). This is his first season competing in the triple jump.

GIRLS: Nicole Sheffer, Penfield softball. The senior catcher and two-time All-Greater Rochester pick slammed two home runs against Churchville-Chili. One was a grand slam, another a 2-run dinger. She also drove in three runs with a double. She also belted a two-run homer against Webster Schroeder. She has 9 home runs and 30 RBI this season and is batting .588. For her career, she has 33 for her career and 92 RBI. She had only five homers last year after cracking 12 as a soph.

BOYS: TD Ierlan, Victor lacrosse: The senior won 31 of 33 face-offs for the Blue Devils in wins over McQuaid and Fairport. He has 17 goals and 12 assists this spring and Victor was named No. 1 in the country in one national lacrosse poll

 

April 17, 2016:

Girls: Gia Muto, Mercy softball catcher/DH. The freshman had eight hits in 20 at-bats for a .400 batting average with 11 RBI and 1 home run in Monarchs's 5-0 start. A second-year varsity player, she was 4-for-5 and scored the winning run in a one-run win over Aquinas.


Boys: Frankie Santiago, Franklin is his team, school is World of Inquiry. He's a sophomore 2B/CF. Leads the team with a .667 batting average after picking up 10 hits in 15 at bats and driving in 10 runs in team's 1-3 start. He also stole seven bases in four games. Hit three doubles in four at-bats in a loss to Greece Olympia and had four hits, including two doubles, with five RBI during a win over University Prep.
 

April 12, 2016:

GIRLS: Brittany Pollack, Fairport lacrosse. The junior midfielder had four goals and two assists in a 16-

6 win over Aquinas on Wednesday. For the season, she has 8 goals and 5 assists for a team-leading

13 points. The Red Raiders are 2-0. They beat Mercy in their opener, 19-5. They play at Victor on

Tuesday.

BOYS: Brennan Smith, Webster Thomas. The senior left-hander no-hit Irondequoit over four innings

on Thursday while striking out 11 batters. At the plate he also went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs

batted to lead the Titans to a season-opening win, 6-0, over Irondequoit.

 

April 05, 2016:

BOYS: Pittsford senior attack Jon Perotto scored eight goals in two wins, notching four goals and one assis in a March 25 win over Worthington Kilbourne of Ohio and pumping in four more with two assists on March 30 against Orchard Park. He's committed to play at the University of Vermont next season. 

GIRLS: LeRoy senior pitcher Ally Uberty threw a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts in a 15-2 win on Friday, April 1 over Geneseo in Livingston County softball action.

 

February 21, 2016:

GIRLS: Lanae-Tava Thomas - a sophomore at Rush-Henrietta, she won 3 events at the Section V Class A/B Indoor Track Championships (long jump at 20' 2.5"/breaking her own Section V record set in January, triple jump 36.5, 55-meter dash: 6.95 seconds). According to DyeStat.com, she has the fastest girls 55-meter dash in the nation, with her 6.90 she set on Dec. 30.

BOYS: Quinton Rose - a senior guard from Bishop Kearney, he had 20 points in the Kings' 88-57 sectional win over Hilton on Wednesday. He also surpassed 1,000 career points. The 6-foot-6 guard will be attending Temple next year. 

February 13, 2016:

BOYS: Cody Anders, Brockport. The sophomore became a three-time Section V Class A wrestling champion by winning the 106-pound division. He has a 34-4 career record this season, 91-19 in his career.  

GIRLS: Ellie Pauly, Hilton. The senior turned in a personal-best time of 7:27.93 - the top time in Section V this indoor season -- in the 1,500-meter racewalk event at RIT.

February 08, 2016:

BOYS: Tommy Eastman, Honeoye Falls-Lima. The senior forward had 22 points and 11 rebounds on Monday in a 66-55 win over Spencerport. He also had 25 points in an 11-point win on Wednesday against Brighton. On Friday, he pumped in 26 points in a overtime loss to Irondequoit 58-57 when he surpassed 1,000 career points.

GIRLS: Annabelle Hinds, Northstar Christian. The junior guard/forward broke the school scoring record for boys or girls in a 79-51 win Friday over Finney. She had 43 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals. 

February 05, 2016:

BOYS: Pierce Currie. The Webster Thomas hockey forward scored three goals in the 5-3 win at Hilton on Jan. 23 and also had one goal to help his team win at Brockport on Jan 28. He has a total of 11 goals and eight assists leading Thomas with 19 points. 

GIRLS: Cameron Graupman. The Hilton senior had a record-breaking week, literally, as she had two huge basketball games. On Wednesday, she scored 30 points in a win over Batavia. On Friday, she had 36 points, breaking the single-game scoring record of Becky Hebert, and surpassed Kristen Clark's career record. Graupman's total is now 1406.
 

January 25, 2016:

Amanda Vestri, Webster Thomas: The junior who was an All-Greater Rochester pick last fall in cross country ran the fastest 3,000-meter time reported to the Section V's Rochester Winter Track League this season last Saturday -- 10 minutes, 38.37 seconds -- during the Trent Jackson/Cedric Walker Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Frank Gaffney, Hilton hockey: The senior forward finished with a goal and five assists versus Irondequoit on Jan. 12, then had an assist Tuesday during a 4-1 loss to Greece Athena/Odyssey. He leads the team with 13 goals, 21 assists and 34 points.

GIRLS|Saniaa Wilson, Bishop Kearney: The 6-foot forward, who is in seventh grade, scored 24 points with 16 rebounds and 6 blocked shots during a 64-39 win over Syracuse Nottingham and had 24 points, 17 rebounds and 7 blocks in 59-56 win over rival Mercy.

BOYS|Isaiah Stewart, McQuaid: The freshman big man who is already drawing interest from the likes of Georgetown and Syracuse had 41 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 63-62 win over Edison and a 42-point, 23-rebound night in a 96-85 loss to Leadership Academy.

GIRLS: Senior Demetria Woodard posted three 20-point games to help the Gananda girls basketball team remain undefeated. Woodard, a captain and center/forward, scored 27 points in Monday's win over North Rose-Wolcott, and added 22 points with 19 rebounds in Wednesday's win over Clyde- Savannah. She capped her week with 21 points and six rebounds in a 45-30 home win over East Rochester as the Blue Panthers improved to 8-0.

BOYS: Junior Bryan Harrell posted a pair of double-doubles to spark the Early College boys basketball to three wins on the week. Harrell, a forward, scored 32 points with 13 rebounds as the Cobras defeated the World of Inquiry 71-54 Thursday night. He followed up with 28 points and 11 rebounds in Friday night's 83-80 win over Leadership Academy as Early College improved to 5-1. Boys: Darrell Barley, East High basketball. The senior guard had 21 points, 7 assists and 6 steals in a 102-91 win over NE/NW College Prep.  

Girls: Franny Valenti, Victor basketball. The senior guard scored 25 points in a 53-51 win over Hilton, then pumped in 13 - including the 1,000th in her career - in a victory over Rush-Henrietta.

GIRLS: Cameron Graupman, Hilton basketball. The senior guard scored 27 points in a season-opening win over Webster Schroeder to become just the second girl in school history to top the 1,000-point mark. She also had 14 points in Friday's win over Fairport.

BOYS: Hunter Barber, Rush-Henrietta bowling. Barber rolled a 713 series, including a 300 game, at Clover Lanes to a win over Webster Schroeder. The Comets' team total of 1,298 pins during one game, a Section V record.

November 23, 2015:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BOYS: Dahmir Pross, Bishop Kearney. The junior running back from Irondequoit rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and intercepted a pass to halt a drive by Section VI champion Franklinville/Ellicottville in a 22-12 win by the Kings (9-2) in the Class D state quarterfinals at Sahlen's Stadium.  

GIRLS: Hayleigh Palotti, Livonia. In her first season running cross country, the sophomore and former soccer midfielder finished third in the state in Class C. Her time of 19 minutes, 13.27 seconds on Saturday was the fastest among Section V's runners and qualified her for this Saturday's Federation meet.

November 14, 2015:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BOYS: Simon Garno, Hilton soccer. He scored two goals in the Cadets' 3-2 win over Williamsville North in the state quarterfinals. The senior midfielder also was named Sec V Class AA Tournament MVP. He has 10 goals and six assists. Hilton (11-9-1) vs. Walt Whitman (18-1-1) 4:15 pm today in Middletown.

GIRLS: Sarah Blowers, Pittsford Sutherland volleyball. The senior outside hitter had 24 kills and 16 digs to help lead the Knights beat Victor in four sets in the Class A state qualifying match on Tuesday. The two-time defending state champions play Will East at 1 pm at Pioneer.

BOYS: Canandaigua senior running back Coron Broomfield tied a Section V football playoff record with 42 carries and rushed for 258 yards and four TDs in a Braves' 28-21 Section V Class A win over Greece Athena. 

GIRLS: Pittsford swimmer Katie Smith helped lead the Panthers to a 14th straight Section V title by winning three events. She was on the record-setting 200-yard freestyle relay team, which broke its own state record, eclipsed her own state record in winning the 50 freestyle and won the 100 free. She became the first swimmer in state history to crack the 23-second barrier in the 50 free, winning in 22.78.

November 03, 2015:

BOYS: Bryan Wager, Honeoye Falls-Lima soccer. The senior forward/midfielder scored both goals in the Section V Class A2 title match on Friday night, including the winner in sudden death OT on a volley off a pass from Alex Ptucha. He has 20 goals and 5 assists, as Cougars repeated as champions

GIRLS: Andrea Smith, Livonia soccer. The sophomore forward scored the winning goal against Newark in sudden death OT in the quarterfinals and assisted on Melissa Mineti's winner in 1-0 upset of #1 Greece Odyssey in the semifinals. The #4 Bulldogs beat #2 Hornell in Friday's Class B1 title match. She has 5 goals, 6 assists.

BOYS: Webster Thomas soccer's Coltan Goodwine, a senior midfielder, scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 win over Gates Chili and played a strong match in a 2-0 loss to Churchville-Chili in the Section Class AA quarterfinals. He finished with three goals and three assists.

GIRLS: Victor junior Erin Norton repeated as the Monroe County Invitational diving champion with a score of 493.15 points for the 11-dive competition. She's in her fifth varsity season.

GIRLS:
Brighton field hockey player Ella Charlesworth scored four goals in three games, including matchups against Pittsford Sutherland and East Rochester, two of Section V's top teams. She led the Barons (8-5), a state semifinalist last season, with 14 goals. She scored three goals or more in three games this season and also has three assists.

BOYS: Hilton senior running back Dillon Philmon finished with a school-record 349 rushing yards, including touchdown runs of 11, 60, 53, 48 and 46 yards, in a 34-24 win over Rush-Henrietta. The Cadets improved to 6-1 heading into sectionals.  

October 16, 2015:

GIRLS: Spencerport sophomore Lucha Fahmer, a center midfielder, leads the Rangers in assists with seven, including a pair in a big 2-0 win over Mercy. 4-0-1 in last five matches.

BOYS: LeRoy quarterback Josh Laurie threw for three TDs, including tosses of 72 and 65 yards in the 2nd quarter to Nate Flint that busted the game open, 21-3 at halftime. He was 4-for-7 for 160+ yards.

BOYS: Fairport running back Jahadi Prior rushed for 236 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns in Friday night's 69-28 win over Churchville-Chili. Prior, a senior, scored four first-half touchdowns including a 59 yarder as the Red Raiders improved to 2-3.


GIRLS: Penfield's Alea Steigerwald handed out 152 assists in wins over Webster Schroeder, Victor and Fairport. Steigerwald had 50 assists with six aces in a five-set win over Schroeder, added 58 assists with 20 digs and 6 kills in the win over Victor, and had 44 assists with 4 kills and 3 aces in the win over Fairport. Penfield, a state tournament finalist in AA, improved to 7-1.

BOYS: Spencerport soccer's Mike Caceci. The senior forward had 2 goals in a 2-0 win over Webster Schroeder and assisted on Victor Pascucchi's 2nd-half winner over Fairport. Caceci also assisted on David DeBellis' winner Saturday vs. R-H. He has a team-high five goals and two assists.

GIRLS: Penfield volleyball's Alea Steigerwald, The junior setter had 50 assists in a five-set win over previously unbeaten Webster Schroeder on Tuesday, then had 58 assists, 20 digs and 6 kills in Thursday's five-set win over Victor, avenging the Patriots' only loss.

BOYS: Greece Olympia junior Noah Mohamed scored twice in a 3-1 win over Eastridge and had a goal and two assists in a 5-1 win over Greece Odyssey. The midfielder has 7 goals and 4 assists for the Spartans (4-2).

BOYS: Penfield running back Frankie Gissendanner rushed 32 times for 210 yards and 3 TDs in a 43-29 win over Churchville-Chili on Friday to help the Patriots even their record at 1-1.

Girls: Sophomore Sammy Watson left her mark on the 2015 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, winning five first-place medals while running the second-fastest 400 meter time in the country this year. Watson capped the season finishing first in the Federation races for both the 400-meters and the 1,500 meters Saturday, winning the 400 in 53.89 seconds, and the 1,500 in 4:25.24. She broke the Section V record by more than three seconds, and now holds the Section V outdoor records in the 400, 800 and 1,500. She also won a state championship in the 400 Friday, winning in 52.69 seconds, breaking the meet record while shaving 2.47 seconds off her time from the state qualifiers.

Boys: Junior Matt Gamble won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association singles title for the second straight year, knocking off Yuval Solomon of Plainview JFK 6-3, 6-1 in the final Saturday at the U.S. Tennis Association Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing to become the fourth repeat champ since 2005. Gamble, a three-time All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year, was the top seed at states and cruised to the state crown, winning every set and dropping only 20 games over five matches to repeat as state champion.

Girls: Rush-Henrietta freshman Lanae-Tava Thomas finished first in the 100 meters (12.28 seconds), 200 meters (25.34) and the long jump (17-feet-91/2 inches) during the Section V Class AA championships at Victor. She also teamed with Stephanie Nwachi, Tori Thompson and Adama Donzo to lower the Section V 400 relay record to 47.74 in winning her fourth sectional championship of the Class AA championships. Thomas, who repeated as the Class AA champion in both the 100 and the 200, will attempt to qualify for the state championships during Friday's state qualifier at Caledonia-Mumford.

Boys: Greece Olympia senior Jack Fox-Salah captured a Section V Class B championship in the discus throw competition (142 feet) during Friday's championship meet at The College at Brockport. Fox-Salah, who successfully defended his discus title, was also runner-up in the shot put (49-2) at sectionals as Olympia won a sectional team title for the fourth consecutive outdoor season, and the last seven track seasons overall. Fox-Salah advanced to Section V's state meet qualifier meet Friday at Caledonia-Mumford.

Girls: Junior Taryn Welch displayed her pinpoint pitching accuracy to lead the Pittsford Mendon softball team to the Class A1 sectional championship. Welch, a right-hander, struck out a career-high 17 batters and tossed a two-hitter as the second-seeded Vikings upset top-seeded Brockport 4-0 Thursday to claim the program's first sectional title since 2012. Welch was named tournament MVP after she tossed five no-hit innings to start the title game against the two-time defending sectional champions from Brockport. Brockport threatened in the fifth, putting runners on second and third with one out. But Welch used a groundout and a fly out to escape the jam. Mendon, which has won 13 of its last 14, is playing Aquinas at 11 a.m. today in the Class A state qualifier.

Boys: Senior Henry Buholtz delivered a near-perfect pitching performance to lift the McQuaid baseball team to the Class AA sectional title. Buholtz, a left-hander, struck out a career-high 16 batters and pitched a no-hitter as second-seeded McQuaid held off upstart Rush-Henrietta 2-0 Thursday at Frontier Field. Buholtz struck out the first nine batters he faced and had 14 strikeouts through six innings as the Knights (20-3) claimed the school's first sectional crown since 2010. 12th-seeded Rush-Henrietta threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Buholtz got a foul pop and a strikeout to lockdown the title. McQuaid will play in the state quarterfinals next Saturday.

Girls: Senior Kayla O'Connell posted a pair of four-goal games to spark the Honeoye Falls-Lima lacrosse team into the Class C sectional final. O'Connell, a Canisius-bound midfielder, scored four goals in Tuesday's 14-4 semifinal win over Midlakes as HF-L had nine different goal scorers. O'Connell followed up with four goals and two assists in Thursday's 14-6 semifinal win over Palmyra-Macedon to send the Cougars (10-8) into the title game against top-seeded Penn Yan Wednesday.

Boys: Junior Ricky Lopez' timely hitting lifted the Bishop Kearney baseball team into the Class C semifinals. Lopez delivered a bases-clearing triple with two outs in the bottom of the sixth of Wednesday's first-round clash with Batavia Notre Dame as the Kings rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 9-4. Taking on No. 2 seeded Oakfield-Alabama in the quarterfinals on Friday, Lopez had a perfect day at the plate. He was 3-for-3 with three RBI, three runs scored and a pair of doubles. The seventh-seeded Kings knocked off the Hornets 7-5 to improve to 13-6. Kearney plays Geneseo Tuesday in the semis.

Boys: Junior Joe Fisher recorded back-to-back six-goal games to spark the Gananda boys lacrosse team to an undefeated week. Fisher, an attacker, scored six goals during Tuesday's 16-9 win over Bloomfield/Honeoye. He capped his week with six goals and two assists in a 13-6 win over Mynderse Wednesday as the Panthers won the Finger Lakes 1 League title. Fisher is second in Section V with 61 goals and is fifth with 83 points as Gananda improved to 14-2, 12-0 in league play.

Girls: Senior Hannah Anderson reached a career milestone as the Caledonia-Mumford softball team claimed the Livingston County league title. Anderson, a shortstop, doubled during Thursday's 5-1 win over LeRoy for the 200th hit of her high school career. She also hit a solo home run in the win. Earlier in the week, Anderson was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in a 6-1 win over Pavilion, and she also was 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBI in a win over Hornell. Cal-Mum improved to 18-2.

Boys: Eighth-grader Will Thompson is no stranger to competitive golf, having already qualified for the U.S. Amateur last summer as a 13-year old. Thompson added to his impressive resume when he carded a round of 68 at Oak Hill's famed East Course Monday afternoon. Thompson earned medalist honors for Pittsford Mendon after recording his three-under par round of 68 during a non-league match featuring perennial powers McQuaid and Pittsford Sutherland. He won going away by six strokes as Mendon improved to 12-1.

Girls: Sophomore Anna Leva tallied 19 points on seven goals with 12 assists as the Palmyra-Macedon girls lacrosse team went 3-0 on the week. Leva, an attacker, handed out one goal with seven assists in Monday's win over Newark. Taking on undefeated Pann Yan Academy on Wednesday, Leva recorded four goals with two assists in as the Red Raiders outlasted the Mustangs 11-10 in OT in a Finger Lakes contest. She capped her week with two goals and three assists in Friday's 13-6 win over Wayne as Pal-Mac improved to 10-3.

Girls:
Junior Taylor Light tossed a pair of gems for the Brockport softball team. Light tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts, and also added a two-run HR in Brockport's 3-2 win over Gates-Chili. She then struck out 11 and pitched a two-hitter during Friday's 7-0 win over Churchville-Chili. In the win, Light was 3-for-4 with three RBI as Brockport improved to 8-1.

Boys: Senior Cam Isaac helped lead the Webster Thomas boys lacrosse team to a 3-0 week. Isaac, a midfielder, scored three goals with an assist in a 16-8 win over Mcquaid, and followed up with two goals and an assist in a 14-8 win over Rush-Henrietta. But he came up the biggest in Thursdays game with Fairport, netting the winner with 6.4 seconds left in the second OT as Thomas won 11-10. Isaac scored three goals with one assist as the Titans improved to 9-2.

April 18, 2015:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Boys: Senior Max Argento tossed a pair of complete-game gems for the East Rochester baseball team. Argento, a right-hander, was nearly perfect during Friday's 13-0 win over Sodus. Argento hit a batter in the first inning, then did not allow another baserunner in tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout. He helped himself at the plate, too, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Earlier in the week, Argento tossed a complete-game, one-hitter in a 10-1 win over Marcus Whitman. The Bombers are 3-2.

Girls: Senior Alyssa Fries totaled 17 points on 13 goals with four assists in a pair of wins for the Victor girls lacrosse team. Fries, a midfielder, scored eight points (five goals, three assists) in Monday's 13-5 win over Fairport. She then added nine points (career-high eight goals with an assist) as the Blue Devils defeated Churchville-Chili 13-8. Behind Fries' career game, Victor improved to 4-1.

Boys: Sophomore Brian Burger averaged 8.5 points per game in leading the Palmyra-Macedon boys lacrosse team to a pair of wins to open the season. Burger, an attacker, scored a career-high eight goals with two assists in a season-opening 14-9 win over Newark. He then added five goals with two assists in Thursday's 10-4 win over Waterloo to spark the Red Raiders (2-0) to a big Finger Lakes league win.

Girls: Sophomore McKenzie Harris tallied 11 points to help the Brighton girls lacrosse team earn a pair of big wins. Harris, an attacker, scored four goals with two assists during a 14-6 triumph over Mercy Tuesday. She then added four goals with an assist in a 10-7 win over Rush-Henrietta Thursday as the Barons improved to 3-0.

March 21, 2015:

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Boys: Junior forward Jack Dugan helped lead the McQuaid hockey team to the Division I state title for the second time in school history, and first since 2005. Dugan scored the Knight's first goal during a semifinal clash with Scarsdale and then assisted on the clinching goal as McQuaid rallied for a 4-2 win to advance into the title game. Down 2-0, Dugan assisted on a power play tally to get McQuaid on the board. Leading 3-2, Dugan scored on a breakaway early in the 3rd for a 4-2 lead. Taking on Baldwinsville in the title game, Dugan scored a pair of goals in a span of 3:01 to stake the Knights to a 3-0 win, and McQuaid breezed to the 6-2 victory. Dugan was named Division I Player of the Year for the Knights (22-2).

Girls: Senior forward Emily Nestler sparked the Rush-Henrietta girls basketball team into the Class AA title game with a pair of huge performances. Nestler scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half as the Royal Comets held off Jamestown 53-45 to advance into the AA Final Four March 14. Nestler then recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds to propel the Royal Comets into the championship game with a 60-46 win over Commack March 20. Nestler and the Royal Comets improved to 23-0 and will face No. 1 Ossining (22-1) at 8:45 Saturday night for the title. R-H is seeking its first state crown since 2006-08.

March 14, 2015:

Boys: Senior Carnell Noble extended his reign of dominance over the rest of the state in the 55-meter dash. Noble, a student at Greece Olympia, captured his second straight state and federation title in the 55-meter dash during Saturday's championship meet at Cornell. Noble won the 55 in 6.46 seconds to defend his state titles for Olympia, which claimed the Class C sectional title this year.

Girls: Senior Cassidy Rattray was named Tournament MVP after guiding the Mynderse Academy girls basketball team to its second sectional title in three years. Rattray, a guard, scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and 4 steals in Saturday's 43-26 triumph over Byron-Bergen for the Class C1 title. Rattray scored 10 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a 57-32 win over Bolivar-Richburg to advance into the Class C state tournament, and she helped the Blue Devils advance into the state quarterfinals with a 50-29 win over Caledonia-Mumford. Mynderse has won seven in a row heading into today's quarterfinal with Chattauqua.

Boys: Junior Christian Simmons recorded a double-double to lift School of the Arts into the Class A2 boys basketball championship game. Simmons, a forward, scored 33 points with 16 rebounds in Tuesday's 71-63 overtime win over Newark. Simmons scored 26 points with 12 rebounds during the second half and overtime as the No. 3 Silverhawks rallied from an eight-point deficit to survive the No. 2 Reds. Simmons converted 13 of 16 free throws in the win as SOTA improved to 19-2.

Girls: Senior Dana Watts averaged 19.5 points per game with 10.5 rebounds to power the Rush-Henrietta girls basketball team to the Class AA sectional championship. Watts, a forward, earned Tournament MVP honors after scoring 17 points with 7 rebounds in Friday's 49-33 win over rival Penfield. Watts added 22 points with 14 rebounds during a 52-35 win over Hilton as the top-seeded Royal Comets (21-0) won their first sectional crown since 2008.

Boys: Senior Scott Lazeroff of Brighton won the state diving title at the New York State Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College on Friday. Lazeroff recorded an 11-dive score of 608.76 points to claim his first state title. He placed third in the preliminaries and surged to first in the finals, finishing more than 30 points ahead of the nearest competitor. Lazeroff finished his career with three sectional titles, a state crown and the Section V diving record. He improved from a third place showing at states last year.

Girls: Freshman Makalia Wilson posted a double-double to power the Penfield girls basketball team into the semifinals of the Class AA tournament with a 55-40 win over Spencerport Friday night. Wilson, a guard, scored 17 points and snared a game-high 17 rebounds to lift the second-seeded Patriots past the 10th-seeded Rangers. Thanks to Wilson's monster game, Penfield improved to 14-4 and will play No. 3 Irondequoit in the AA semifinals.

Boys: Hilton sophomore Yianni Diakomihalis claimed his third straight SuperSectional title to earn Most Outstanding Division I wrestler of the meet for the Cadets. Diakomihalis, a two-time defending state champion, won the 120 pound weight class thanks to an 18-5 major decision win over Victor's Mike Venosa. Diakomihalis was one of five Cadets to claim SuperSectional titles. With the win, Diakomihalis improved to 44-0 this year, and a perfect 138-0 since eighth grade.

Girls: Senior Mara Sindoni etched her name into the Canandaigua girls basketball record books during Wednesday's win over Brighton. Sindoni, a combo guard/forward, scored game-high 26 points during a 55-45 win over Brighton to join Canandaigua's collection of 1,000 point scorers. Sindoni and the Braves used a 24-11 run in the fourth quarter to rally from a seven-point deficit and improve to 7-11. Sindoni has scored 366 points in 18 games and is averaging 20 points per game for the Braves.

Girls: Junior Kylee Kanealey averaged 19 points with 13 rebounds in leading the Irondequoit girls basketball team to a pair of wins. Kanealey, a center, scored 23 points with 18 rebounds as the Eagles earned a 60-46 win over Honeoye Falls-Lima Friday night. Kanealey's double-double helped Irondequoit go on a 22-6 run in the fourth quarter to erase a two-point deficit. Earlier in the week, Kanealey scored 15 points with seven rebounds and 3 blocks in a 69-45 win over Canandaigua Tuesday. The Eagles are 15-2.

Boys: Junior Noah Stevens earned his second consecutive Section V Class B Swimmer of the Meet award after winning a pair of events for Brighton during the championships Friday. Stevens repeated as champion in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming in a meet-record 50.61 seconds. He also claimed the 100 breaststroke in 57.72 seconds, one second off of his meet-record time set during the 2014 championships. Brighton finished third in Class B.

Boys: Junior Simeon Heard surpassed 1,000 career points to spark the Finney boys basketball team to a 2-1 record on the week. Heard scored 36 points, including 21 during the first half, and eclipsed 1,000 career points during Tuesday night's 85-74 win over Belfast. He then added 24 points during a win over Avoca, and closed the week with 27 points during Friday night's 59-45 loss to Northstar Christian. The Falcons are 11-6 on the year.

Girls: Senior Krystal Hunter averaged 23.5 points and eight rebounds in a pair of wins for the School of the Arts girls basketball team. Hunter, a guard, scored 26 points with 8 rebounds, and 5 steals in Thursday's 47-41 win over Greece Olympia. She then added 21 points with 8 rebounds and 5 assists in Friday night's 62-41 win over North Rose-Wolcott. She now has five 20-plus point games this year and has reached double-figures in 16 of 17 games.

Boys: Senior Rodney Roberts averaged 23.5 points per game in two wins for the Wheatland-Chili boys basketball team. Roberts, a combination guard/forward, tallied 31 points with five rebounds in Tuesday's 77-52 win over Avon. Roberts, a second-team All-Greater Rochester selection in 2014, added 16 points with six rebounds as the Wildcats knocked off Oakfield-Alabama 58-54 in a contest played at the Quicken Loans arena in Cleveland. The Wildcats improved to 13-1.

Girls: Sophomore Sammy Watson broke the national sophomore girls record in the 1,000-meter run during Friday's Armory Track Invitational in New York City. Watson bested the field of 14 runners, racing in 2:47.27 to take home first place and break the old record by more than one second. Watson's time shattered the previous Section V record by nearly six seconds.

Girls: Senior Sarah Fink won two individual events to spark the Harley-Allendale Columbia girls swimming team to its 10th straight Genesee Region league title. Fink won the 200-yard indvidual medley in a time of 2:39.35, and won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.19 as the Wolves (12-1) claimed another Genesee Region Division II crown with Friday's 58-31 win over Oakfield-Alabama.

Boys: Junior Raliek Redd had a career game as the Edison boys basketball team knocked off Charlotte 79-77 Friday night. Redd, a guard, scored a career-high 40 points and also had a career-high 10 steals as the Inventors rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat the Lakesiders. Redd also scored 18 points during a win over College Prep earlier in the week. With the two wins, Edison improved to 8-5.

Girls: Senior Shyana McLeod averaged 22 points and 4.3 steals per game in leading the Wayne girls basketball team to a perfect 3-0 week. McLeod, a versatile guard/forward, had 13 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks as the Eagles avenged last season's loss to Pittsford Sutherland in the Class A state qualifier with a 49-42 victory Saturday. She added 32 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in Monday's win over Waterloo. McLeod closed out her week with 21 points and 5 steals in Friday night's 73-53 triumph over Geneva as the Eagles improved to 9-2.

Boys: Senior Jeff Redband averaged 24.5 points with 8.5 rebounds per game in leading the Batavia boys basketball team to a 2-0 week. Redband, an All-Greater Rochester selection last year, scored 31 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists in Wednesday's win over Greece Olympia. Redband scored 25 first-half points on 11 of 12 shooting and finished a perfect 5-for-5 on three-pointers in the win. He added 18 points with 9 rebounds in Friday's 54-49 overtime win at Greece Arcadia as the Blue Devils improved to 7-2.

Girls: Senior Karissa Birthwright averaged 29.5 points with and 22.5 rebounds and 8 blocks per game during a 2-0 week for the Greece Odyssey girls basketball team. Birthwright, a two-time All-Greater Rochester forward, collected 29 points and snared a school-record 27 rebounds with 7 blocks in Friday night's 65-47 win over East. She also had 30 points, 18 rebounds and 9 blocks in a win over Greece Arcadia Tuesday night. The Leopards are 7-2.

Boys: Sophomore David Farrance recorded a pair of four-goal games to lead the Victor hockey team to a pair of wins. Farrance, a defenseman who has committed to Boston University, scored four goals during Wednesday night's 7-2 win against Canandaigua. He then added four goals with two assists to spark the Blue Devils to an 8-4 win over Spencerport Friday night as Victor improved to 5-4-1.

Boys: Junior Anthony Lamb's all-around game led the Greece Athena boys basketball team to the championship of the Slam Dunk Boys Basketball Classic in Westchester County. Lamb, an All-Greater Rochester forward, averaged 23.5 points per game in leading the undefeated Trojans to the title. Lamb scored 23 points in a 67-66 win over host Iona Prep, then added 24 points with 14 rebounds in a 76-58 win over Spring Valley as Athena improved to 6-0 with wins over a pair of state-ranked schools.

Girls: Senior Alley Phillips averaged 17 points with six steals in a pair of wins as the Pittsford Mendon girls basketball team claimed the championship of the Mendon tournament. Phillips recorded 18 points with 5 steals and 4 assists in a 63-31 win over Honeoye Falls-Lima. The Vikings led 24-5 after one quarter and rolled into the title game. Taking on undefeated Hilton, Phillips added 16 points with 7 rebounds and 7 steals in a 66-54 triumph. Mendon outscored Hilton 44-33 in the second half to improve to 5-2.

Girls: Penn Yan senior Courtney Lafler earned a milestone victory as the Mustangs wrestling squad knocked off North Rose-Wolcott Tuesday evening. Lafler, who wrestles at 106 pounds, earned a 3-1 decision over Pedro Pascual in the final match of the evening for career win number 100. Lafler, a member of the varsity since eighth grade, earned two points in the match's first 30 seconds en route to the historic win. Penn Yan improved to 5-4, 2-1 in the Wayne-Finger Lakes Central.

Boys: Penfield freshman Frankie Gissendanner has been on the varsity wrestling team for three years, and in every season, he has captured a Monroe County league championship. During Saturday's competition at Webster Schroeder, Gissendanner edged Victor's T.D. Ierlan 9-7 at 145 pounds during the semifinals, then knocked off Schroeder's Mike Laloggia 8-4 to complete the three-peat. Gissendanner improved his record to 6-0 this year with the Monroe County championship.

Boys: Senior Dylan Harrington guided the Irondequoit boys basketball team to a pair of close wins on the week. The guard scored 16 points in Wednesday's come-from behind, 77-73 win over Pittsford Mendon as Irondequoit rallied from a 40-31 halftime deficit to win. Then, Harrington went coast-to-coast for a layup at the buzzer in Friday night's 64-62 win over Webster Schroeder to help the Eagles improve to 4-0. Harrington finished with 13 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds in the win.

Girls: Senior Princella McCullough averaged 17 rebounds with 13 points and 4 blocks in three wins for the Bishop Kearney girls basketball team. McCullough snared 22 rebounds, scored 11 points and had 4 blocks and 4 steals in Saturday's 54-51 win over Sacred Heart. She also recorded 19 points with 15 rebounds and 3 blocks in Tuesday's 56-50 triumph over Jamesville-DeWitt, the Class A state runner-up from Section III. On Friday night, McCullough added 14 rebounds with 9 points and 4 blocks in a 75-37 win over Mount Saint Mary's as the Kings won their fifth straight to improve to 5-1.

Girls: Senior Tessa Gordinier stuffed the stat sheet in leading the Keshequa girls basketball team to a 3-0 week. Gordinier, a guard, scored 24 points, handed out 8 assists, and had 9 rebounds and 9 steals in a win over York. She also added 18 points with 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks and 4 steals as the Indians handed Cal-Mum its first loss of the year, 48-40 Friday night. Thanks to Gordinier's strong play, the defending Class C3 sectional champs are 3-0.

Boys: Senior Ryan Cosgrove etched his name into the Churchville-Chili hockey record books during Tuesday night's 6-4 win over Aquinas. Cosgrove, a forward, scored two goals and handed out one assist to eclipse 100 career points, the first player in Saints history to score 100 or more points. Cosgrove set up Nick Kuszlyk late in the second period to knot the score at 3 and surpass 100 career points. Cosgrove, who added two goals with an assist in Friday's loss to Spencerport, leads the 4-2 Saints in goals (7), and points (12).

Girls: Senior Zoe McDonald helped lead the defending state champions from Romulus to a 3-0 record in the opening week of the season. McDonald, a center, scored 28 points with 12 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 4 steals in a season-opening win over Finney. She added 23 points with 14 rebounds in a win over Naples in the Warriors' Finger Lakes West opener, and had 23 points in Romulus' 54-42 win over Harley Allendale-Columbia Friday night.

Boys: Senior Shabazz Mosley guided Leadership Academy to a pair of wins to start the season. Mosley, a guard, scored 22 points with seven rebounds in Wednesday's season-opening, 77-72 triumph over Charlotte. Mosley then scored 20 points with eight boards in Friday night's 67-53 win over Edison as the defending Class B sectional champions improved to 2-0 to start the year.

Boys: Senior R.J. Nichol helped guide the Greece Athena boys soccer team to the first state championship in school history. Nichol, a midfielder, scored two second-half goals to power the Trojans past Section XI's East Hampton 4-2 Sunday to win the Class A state championship. Leading 2-1, Nichol headed in Nick Messmer's corner kick for a 3-1 lead. Up 3-2, Nichol tacked on an insurance goal on a mini breakaway with 10:30 remaining for the Trojans (16-6-1).

Girls: Junior Aliah Bowllan earned tournament MVP honors after guiding the Pittsford Sutherland girls volleyball team to its third Class A state championship in the last five years. Bowllan, the libero, recorded 45 digs in a five-set win over Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake in the state final. Sutherland lost the first set, won the next two, fell in the fourth set, but prevailed 28-26 in a thrilling and decisive fifth set. Sutherland led much of the fifth set, including 24-21, but trailed 26-25. Bowllan and the Knights staved off two match points to win states in dramatic fashion.

Boys: Senior Dylan Harrington came up with a pair of big fourth quarter interceptions to lift the Irondequoit football team into the state semifinals for the first time in school history. Harrington had two interceptions in the final 3:21 of the game as the Eagles (8-3) rallied from a 21-7 deficit to knock off Sweet Home 24-21 Friday night. After Jacob Sampson's 24-yard field goal put Irondequoit ahead 24-21, Harrington stepped in front of a pass and came down with the interception to complete the comeback.

Girls: Senior Nicole Rocco scored the game-winning goal to send the Webster Thomas field hockey team into the state semifinals for the first time in school history. Rocco, a forward, finished with a goal and an assist to help the Titans (14-2-3) knock off Section VI's Orchard Park 2-0 Monday night in the Class A state quarterfinals. After a scoreless first half, Rocco gave Thomas the lead for good on a penalty corner with 16 minutes remaining. She then set up Kim Johnston for a penalty corner insurance goal a few minutes later.

Boys: Senior Mike McMullen shredded the Bath defense through the air to lead LeRoy to its Section V-best 15th sectional football championship. McMullen threw four touchdown passes and was named the Class C Most Valuable Player in a 34-24 win Friday night. McMullen passed for 288 yards as top-seeded LeRoy rallied from a 16-6 deficit to claim a sectional title in Brian Moran's final season as head coach. The Oatkan Knights improved to 10-0 with the win.

Girls: Honeoye Falls-Lima sophomore Grace Baumer was named the Swimmer of the Meet during Friday night's Class B sectional championship meet at the Webster Aquatic Center. Baumer won two individual events - the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley - and keyed a pair of winning relay teams to earn Swimmer of the Meet. Baumer broke a 15-year Section V record in the breaststroke in winning her third straight sectional title. Baumer also led HF-L to a title in the 200 medley relay as the Cougars relay squad qualified for states.

Girls:
Junior Lindsay Scott helped spark the Webster Schroeder field hockey team into the Class A championship. Belt, a forward/midfielder, scored one goal and assisted on two others during Schroeder's quarterfinal win over Gates Chili. She then added three goals with an assist to lift the Warriors into the sectional final with a 5-0 shutout of Fairport. Schroeder will take on crosstown rival Thomas in the championship Tuesday night at Eastridge.

Boys: Junior Alex Ptucha converted penalty kicks in back-to-back playoff games to lift the Honeoye Falls-Lima boys soccer team to the Class A2 championship. Ptucha scored on a penalty kick in the first overtime of Friday's championship, a 2-1 win over Pittsford Sutherland. Earlier in the week, Ptucha scored on a penalty kick during a semifinal triumph over Aquinas to lead the top-seeded Cougars (16-3) to the championship.

Boys: Senior Rohel Duncan exploded for a career-high four goals to lift the Aquinas boys soccer team

past Newark in a Class A2 quarterfinal Friday night. Duncan, a forward, scored three times during a span

of 16 minutes in the first half, and added a tally early in the second to help fourth-seeded AQ knock off

Newark 4-1. The Little Irish (9-5-3) advance to face top-seeded Honeoye Falls-Lima Tuesday night in the

semifinals.

Girls: Junior Lauren Graupman's stellar play in net helped the Pittsford Sutherland girls soccer team

knock off Honeoye Falls-Lima in the first round of the Class A tournament. Graupman made eight saves,

including a big stop in the penalty kick shootout, to lift 12th

Graupman denied several good scoring chances in the two scoreless overtime periods to get the Knights

(7-10) into the shootout. After HF-L and Sutherland each converted their first three PKs, Graupman

made a big save on the fourth shooter to propel Sutherland, which advances to face Brighton in the

quarterfinals Saturday.

Boys: Kory Fogarty delivered a big game on the ground as the Red Jacket football team remained undefeated with a big win over Mynderse. Fogarty, a senior who earned a spot on the Democrat and Chronicle's All-Greater Rochester squad last year, rushed for 208 yards and scored three touchdowns in Friday's 57-14 win. Fogarty did his damage on just eight carries as the Indians remained one of five undefeateds in Section V. Red Jacket, the defending Class DD champions, improved to 7-0.

Girls: Lena Kaufman showed poise beyond her years in capturing the Section V girls golf championship Tuesday at Ravenwood Golf Club. Kaufman, a freshman at Pittsford Sutherland, edged out Pittsford Mendon's Sydney Ball on the first playoff hole to claim the title. Kaufman trailed Ball by two strokes entering the back nine, but shot a 44 to rally and force a playoff. Kaufman and eight other golfers will represent Section V at the New York State tournament in June at SUNY Delhi.

Boys: Eric Tuttle reached a personal milestone in leading the Irondequoit boys volleyball team to a 3-0 week. Tuttle recorded 23 kills during the Eagles' four-set win over Brighton Tuesday night to eclipse 1,000 career kills. He reached the milestone on his final kill of the evening as Irondequoit won 25-17, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-19. Tuttle and the Eagles are 14-1 after wins over Gates Chili and Churchville-Chili.

Girls: Jennifer Lee recorded a pair of two-goal games as the Pittsford Mendon field hockey team went 2-0 on the week. Lee, a junior, had two goals during Tuesday's 3-0 win over Irondequoit, and added a pair of goals during a shutout of Eastridge on Thursday as the Vikings improved to 8-1-2.

 Boys: Bishop Kearney's Todd LaRocca continues to put up video game numbers in leading the Kings to a 5-0 record. LaRocca completed 15 of 21 passes for 321 yards with six passing TDs as the Kings rolled Perry 64-10 Friday night. LaRocca also scored on a five-yard TD run as the Kings remained one of 10 undefeateds in Section V.


Girls: Rush-Henrietta's Alex Cooper was the fastest female finisher in last week's 50th annual McQuaid Cross Country Invitational, placing sixth in the seeded AAA race against some of the best competition in the country. Cooper, a senior, ran the 3-mile Genesee Valley course in a time of 17:41.7. She earned the Katie Harper Memorial Plaque as the meet's fastest female runner from Section V.

Boys: Senior Joey Carrier delivered a dynamic rushing performance to spark the Victor football team to a big win over Webster Schroeder. Carrier rushed for 234 yards and scored four touchdowns in Friday's 34-14 victory over Schroeder. Tied at 14 early in the third quarter, Carrier broke off an 18-yard TD run and added a 37-yard TD scamper as the Blue Devils closed the game on a 20-0 run. Victor improves to 3-1.

Girls: Senior Kailey Falk had a pair of solid games to lead the Mercy volleyball team to an undefeated week. Falk compiled 13 kills with 6 digs and 3 blocks in Tuesday's four-set win over Orchard Park. Taking on Mount Saint Mary's Friday evening, Falk added 16 kills with 9 digs and 4 blocks to lead the Monarchs to a five-set victory. Falk had four kills with three digs in the decisive fifth set to spark Mercy (6-1), which plays Pittsford Sutherland, the defending Class A state champs, Tuesday.

Boys: Junior Dillon Philmon scored five touchdowns as the Hilton football team won a track meet with Spencerport, prevailing 56-27 Friday night. Philmon, a running back, rushed for 306 yards and scored five TDs to lift the Cadets past their westside rivals. Philmon scored the first four TDs of the game, reaching the end zone twice in the first quarter and twice in the second quarter as the Cadets took a 35-7 halftime lead. Leading 42-21, Philmon broke a 66-yard TD in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Girls: Junior Tami Comins and the Pittsford Mendon girls tennis team handed rival Brighton its first loss of the year Tuesday afternoon. Comins, a member of the 2013 All-Greater Rochester team, earned a straight-sets, 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles to spark the undefeated Vikings (8-0) past the Barons (9-1) in a big Monroe County Division III matchup.

Boys: Senior Kyle Preston accounted for five touchdowns as the Cal-Mum football team rallied from a 19-point deficit to win a shootout with York, 41-40. Preston tossed four touchdown passes, including two during a 20-point fourth quarter as the Red Raiders (1-1) overcame a 40-19 deficit starting the third quarter. Preston, who went 13 for 22 for 166 yards and four TDs, also ran for a score in the comeback for Cal-Mum.

Girls: Junior Giulia Mahoney recorded 12 points to spark the Gananda girls soccer team to a 3-0 week. Mahoney, a midfielder, scored twice and added an assist during a 5-1 win over Northstar, netted the game-winning goal during a 2-0 win over Williamson and capped her week with a one-goal, three-assist effort during a win over Red Creek. Mahoney has six goals with five assists to lead the undefeated Panthers (4-0).

Boys: Webster Schroeder sophomore Matt Gamble has qualified for the state tennis tournament four years in a row, but this year, Gamble moved into the semifinals for the first time in his illustrious career. Gamble, the top seed in the singles bracket, cruised to two victories at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Gamble topped Felipe Osses-Konig of Beacon 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals after winning 6-0, 6-2 in the second round and is two wins away from that elusive state title.

Girls: Senior Amanda Dow chose a great time for the first home run of her varsity career. Dow launched a walkoff, three-run home run to lift the top-seeded Greece Arcadia softball team to the Class A1 sectional championship. Dow's blast sent the Titans (17-2) to a 4-1 win over Pittsford Sutherland, and ensured longtime head coach Gary Myers would go out a winner. Myers is retiring at the end of the season, his 37th coaching softball. Dow earned tournament MVP honors after recording two of Arcadia's five hits in the championship game.

Boys: Penfield's Garrett Eckl used his bat and his arm to carry the Patriots to an upset win over Hilton in the Class AA baseball quarterfinals. Eckl delivered two hits and drove in two runs as the 10th seeded Patriots (12-10) knocked off second-seeded Hilton 6-5 Friday. Eckl and the Patriots stormed out to a 6-2 lead. After Hilton pulled within 6-5, Eckl closed the door on Hilton, earning the save as Penfield advanced.

Girls: Wilson's Cantarra Burroughs earned track MVP honors after three dominant performances in the Rochester City Athletic Conference championships Monday. Burroughs, a senior, captured league titles in the 100, 200 and 400 meters to spark the Wildcats to a second-place finish. Burroughs won the 100 in 12.4 seconds, the 200 in 25.39 and the 400 in 59.98 to complete the sweep of the sprint events.

Girls: Senior Taylor Reed posted a pair of big scoring performances to lead the Honeoye Falls-Lima girls lacrosse team to a pair of big wins. Reed assisted on both the game-tying goal late in regulation, as well as the winner in overtime as HF-L rallied from a 7-3 deficit to knock off Corning-IV 12-11 last Saturday. The midfielder finished with four goals and two assists in the comeback win. Taking on rival Canandaigua, Reed added five goals and two assists as the Cougars improved to 12-4 with a 10-8 win.

Boys: Sophomore Alec Values delivered a big pinch-hit and added a complete-game win on the mound for the Pittsford Sutherland baseball team. Values, an outfielder, hit a two-run single in the sixth to spark the Knights to a come-from-behind, 8-5 win over crosstown rival Mendon Saturday. He then earned his third win of the year, tossing a three-hitter with no earned runs and four strikeouts in Monday's 3-1 win over Honeoye Falls-Lima. The Knights improved to 12-7.

Boys: Junior Joe Fornataro broke the single-game scoring record in leading the Greece Athena/Odyssey boys lacrosse teams to a pair of wins. Fornataro scored a school-record 10 goals Tuesday as the Thunder edged crosstown rival Arcadia/Olympia 14-13. He then added three goals with two assists to power the Thunder past Avon 19-7 to run their record to 5-3.

Girls: Nicole Sheffer's bat powered the Penfield softball team past Rush-Henrietta Friday afternoon. Sheffer was 3-for-5 with a pair of grand slams and finished with a career-high nine RBI as the Patriots rolled the Royal Comets 18-4.

Boys: Senior Adam Scott pitched a pair of dominant performances in leading the Canandaigua baseball team to a 3-1 week. Scott threw a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts in Saturday's 3-0 shutout of Webster Thomas. He also added an RBI single in the win. Facing Honeoye Falls-Lima, Scott limited the Cougars to three hits and had 12 strikeouts in a 7-1 triumph Thursday afternoon. The Braves are 7-2 after Friday's 9-8 win over Pittsford Mendon.

Girls: Junior Bridget Flynn's scoring touch helped the Victor Blue Devils go 2-0 on the week. Flynn, a midfielder, netted the game-winning goal with 44 seconds left in regulation as the Blue Devils held off Webster Thomas 8-7 Wednesday. She then scored four goals as Victor knocked off rival Canandaigua 9-6 Friday. Thanks to Flynn's strong play, the Blue Devils are 8-1.

Girls: Junior Julia DiMartino tossed three gems to lead the Brockport softball team to an undefeated week down in Myrtle Beach, S.C. DiMartino allowed only six hits and two runs in her three dominant performances as the Blue Devils improved to 4-0 on the season. DiMartino threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts in a 9-0 win over Colleton County and pitched a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and also drove in three runs in a 5-2 win over West Ashley. She concluded the week throwing a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and added a two-run homer in a 6-0 triumph over Carolina Forest.

Boys: Junior Blake Phelps contributed at the plate and with his bat to lead the Geneseo baseball team past Avon in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Phelps tossed a no-hitter and struck out 11 batters with no walks to power the Blue Devils to a 3-0 win over the Braves. Phelps faced 22 batters, just one over the minimum, and also added an RBI single for Geneseo, which advanced into the Class C state title game in 2013.

Rowles, a midfielder, scored three goals with an assist as the Red Raiders handed Wayne a 16-3 setback Saturday. She then scored four goals, including the winner, and had an assist as Pal-Mac handed Penn Yan its first loss, 8-7 Monday.

Boys: Senior Max Argento pitched a no-hitter to spark the East Rochester baseball team to a season-opening win over Williamson. Argento struck out 11 batters and also had two RBI as East Rochester knocked off its Wayne County rival 7-0 Wednesday afternoon.

BOYS: Senior midfielder Mike Trass scored three goals, including the winner with 2:11 left in double overtime, to lift Webster Schroeder past Irondequoit 7-6 in lacrosse on Thursday. It was the Warriors' first win.

Girls: Senior Liz Greendyke earned Most Valuable Player honors in guiding the Pittsford Sutherland girls basketball team to its first state title since 2006. Greendyke, a guard, scored 19 points during a 57-41 victory over Jamesville-DeWitt in the Class A state championship as the Knights won their first state title in eight years. Taking on Buffalo Cardinal O'Hara in the Federation semifinals, Greendyke added 21 points with 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 blocks, but Sutherland fell 73-65. Sutherland capped the season 24-2.

Boys: Senior Dontay Carruthers led the East High boys basketball team into the Class A state title game before the Orientals came up just short of that coveted state crown. Carruthers, a guard, scored 24 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists as East advanced into the title game with a 57-45 win over Section XI's Red Hook. Taking on Scotia-Glenville in the title game, Carruthers scored 14 points for the Orientals, who trailed just 45-42 heading into the fourth before Scotia-Glenville pulled away for the win. East finished 19-5.

Boys: Junior Ryan Beutel had a pair of solid performances in net to lift the Webster Schroeder ice hockey team to the New York State Division II state title. Beutel stopped 14 shots during a 3-1 win over Section II's Queensbury, including making a nice save on a short-handed breakaway attempt, to guide the Warriors into the state championship. Taking on Section VII's Beekmantown in the title game, Beutel stopped all 19 shots as the Warriors (18-6-2) earned their first-ever state title with a 2-0 win.

Girls: Junior Kharysma Bryant elevated her game during the postseason to lead the Bishop Kearney girls basketball team back into the state championship. Bryant, a guard, scored a career-high 26 points and added seven rebounds in a 69-48 win over Section VI's Tonawanda to advance the Kings into the Class B state semifinals. Bryant added 15 of her 19 points in the first half as the Kings (21-2), the defending Class C state champions, defeated Section I's Woodlands 71-58 to earn a spot in the state championship.

Girls: Junior Tessa Gordinier posted a pair of double-doubles in sparking the Keshequa girls basketball team to the Class C3 sectional title and a spot in the state quarterfinals. Gordinier, a guard, scored 13 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and added 4 steals and 4 assists as top-seeded Keshequa claimed the Class C3 title with a 41-39 win over South Seneca. Gordinier was named Tournament MVP. She followed up with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists as Keshequa knocked off C2 champion Lyons 67-60 Wednesday night. The Indians (21-1) take on Chautauqua from Section VI in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Boys: Senior P.J. Ransford of Pittsford not only won a pair of state championships during the swimming championships Saturday, he shattered the Federation record in the 500-yard freestyle in the process as the Pittsford swimming team claimed the public schools team title for the second straight season. Ransford swam the 500 free in 4 minutes, 21.06 seconds, besting the old Federation record by three full seconds. He also won a public state title in the 200 free, swimming in a personal-best time of 1:39.16 as the Panthers scored 166 points, nine more than Section IV's Ithaca.

GIRLS: Junior Shyana McLeod averaged 25 points per game in three sectional wins and scored four points in the final 11 seconds to lift the fourth-seeded Wayne girls basketball team to its first-ever sectional title. McLeod scored 23 points with 4 steals in a 55-36 quarterfinal win over Aquinas. She added a career-high 35 pts with 6 assists and 4 steals as the Eagles blew out top-seeded Eastridge to advance into the A2 sectional final. Taking on Geneva, McLeod scored 10 of her 17 pts in the second half, but Wayne still trailed 54-43 with six minutes to go. She scored two baskets in the final 11 seconds, knocking down a short jumper, stealing the ensuing inbounds pass and hitting another jumper as Wayne completed the comeback, 61-59.

BOYS: Senior Hunter Doyle won both the slalom and giant slalom races to claim the New York State alpine skiing combined championship Tuesday at Bristol Mountain. Doyle, from Pittsford Mendon, claimed the slalom championship on Monday, then won the giant slalom with a combined time of 1 minute and 55 seconds to earn the combined championship. In the giant slalom, Doyle posted the best finish after his first run, then outdueled defending state champion Kieran Mottau to win by 35 hundreths of a second. Doyle, who won the Section V slalom title this year, helped Section V claim the team title.

Boys: Senior Anthony Fedele tallied seven points on four goals with three assists to power the Greece Thunder into the Class A championship. Fedele, a forward, scored two goals with three assists as the fourth-seeded Thunder beat No. 5 Churchville-Chili 8-1 in the quarterfinals. He then added two goals as the Athena/Odyssey avenged two earlier losses to top-seeded Pittsford, knocking off the Panthers 5-2 to earn a date with Fairport for the championship at 4 p.m. Sunday. 16-5-1.

Girls: Senior Cierra Diillard's hot shooting carried the Gates Chili girls basketball team into the Class AA semifinals. Dillard, a guard, scored 44 to spark the fourth-seeded Spartans past No. 5 Hilton 59-54 Friday night. Dillard tied a school-record with 7 ‘3s', hitting five ‘3s' and scoring all 21 of Gates' points in the third quarter as the Spartans rallied past Hilton. Gates Chili, 15-5, earns a date with top-seeded Penfield in the semifinals Monday night at 8 p.m.

Boys: Freshman Yianni Diakomihalis and the Hilton Cadets dominated the Section V class AA wrestling championships as the Cadets did something that had never been accomplished before in school history: win a wrestling sectional championship. Diakomihalis, the defending state champion, pinned Penfield's Parker Kropman in 3 minutes and 19 seconds Saturday to claim the Class AA title at 106 pounds. Diakomihalis was one of five Cadets to claim sectional titles, and one of 16 wrestlers to advance into this weekend's Super Sectionals.

Girls: Freshman GiGi Vasile had a tremendous day at Bristol Mountain to claim the Section V Class A alpine skiing combined championship Wednesday. Vasile, from Webster Thomas, ran first in the slalom and second in the giant slalom to claim the alpine combined title. She finished no worse than fourth in each of her four runs to bring home the combined title and qualify for the state championships.

Girls: Junior Candaisy Crawford averaged 26.5 points per game in leading the Webster Thomas girls basketball team to a pair of wins. Crawford, a guard, scored 24 points as Thomas knocked off previously-undefeated Pittsford Sutherland 51-45 Tuesday night. She then added 29 points with four assists, four rebounds and three steals in the Titans' 71-51 win over Brockport Thursday night. Thomas improved to 7-9.

Boys: Senior Keon Dunbar broke his own school record for points in a game in leading the Greece Olympia boys basketball team to a pair of win. Dunbar, a guard, scored a school-record 52 points in an 83-73 win over Monroe Thursday. Dunbar went 22 of 26 at the free-throw line and added 5 assists and 5 steals in the win. He scored 35 points Friday night in an 80-68 win over Spencerport as Olympia (5-10) has won five of six following a 1-8 start.

Boys: Senior Quinn Wiedemer tallied four goals with five assists in leading the Fairport hockey team to a pair of wins. Wiedemer, a forward, recorded five points on one goal with a season-best four assists, including assisting on the eventual game-winning goal during Saturday's 5-4 win over Brighton/East Rochester/Honeoye Falls-Lima. Then on Tuesday, Wiedemer added his first hat trick of the season and added an assist in Fairport's (11-5-1) big win over Churchville-Chili.


Girls: Junior Kali Mouw averaged 26 points in leading the Avon girls basketball team to a pair of Livingston County victories. Mouw, a guard, scored 21 points with seven steals in Tuesday night's win over York. Taking on rival LeRoy Friday night, Mouw recorded 31 points with 10 steals and 7 rebounds in leading the Braves to a 69-50 victory. It was her ninth time scoring at least 20 points as Avon improved to 14-2.

Robson has 17 goals with 15 assists (32 points) for the 13-2 Cadets.

Girls: Junior Ashley Vanderwall continued her hot-shooting ways in leading the Palmyra-Macedon girls basketball team to a 3-0 week. Vanderwall, a guard, recorded 25 points with four steals in Monday's 63-50 win over Aquinas and added 31 points with 6 rebounds and 3 steals in a win over Newark Wednesday night. That performance put her over 1,000 career points. She closed with 27 points and seven steals in Friday's win over Mynderse as Pal-Mac improved to 8-4, 8-2 in Finger Lakes East play.
